Our U14 Girls captured the league title yesterday afternoon, Saturday, August 14th. They travelled to Castlefinn to take on Robert Emmets in the last round of fixtures, with top spot secured it was important that the team went out and finished the season unbeaten. They got off to a dream start when Chloe Lowther netted early on, Robert Emmets did respond quickly pointing from play and then minutes later scoring a goal to put them in the lead. Team captain Kayla Boyle wasn't long rectifying matters, she pointed to level the game and then did so again to bring Naomh Ultan in at the water break one point up.
Déjà vu after the water break in this game, as Chloe Lowther again netted the ball to put Naomh Ultan four points up. Sarah Hegarty managed to get another goal soon after to put them in a very healthy position after being made to battle hard in the opening 15 minutes. Melissa O'Shea got on the scoresheet with a point from play as the half began to draw out. Emmets did add two scores to their tally and that took us in at the half time interval at Naomh Ultan 3-3 Robert Emmets 1-3.
These girls have a tendency to get goals straight off the bat and this was the case yet again when Kayla Boyle got her side's 3rd goal early on in the second half. Kayla Curran split the posts for a point soon after and Chloe Lowther firstly pointed, then minutes later completed her hat trick of goals by finishing tidily to put no doubt in the result. Emmets did rally getting a point and then after some high pressure inside the Naomh Ultan 21' were awarded a penalty. The Robert Emmets player stepped up and it was saved brilliantly by keeper Sarah Fitzgerald. Up came the last water break then with the scores at 5-5 to 1-4.
Remarkably, at the beginning of this game and at the beginning of each of the three restarts Naomh Ultan goaled. This time it was Kayla Boyle to get her second of the afternoon. Nicole Murphy made sure to get her name on the scoresheet with a good score from play and that then marked the end of the Naomh Ultan scoreboard ticking. Emmets pointed late one but if was very much to be Naomh Ultan's day. This side managed to maintain a 100% record this year, winning 5 out of 5 and being deserving league winners. Huge congratulations and well done to all the players and management. The team returned to Pairc Naomh Ultan to a great welcome by supporters and club members, a memorable day for all involved!
The management and Naomh Ultan would like to thank Barrys of Bruckless for supplying food for the team after the game. Also thanks to all who showed for the team's homecoming and to those who helped out.
